Course updates and changes
Good Morning Everyone,
I am writing to you today to explain a variety of things, one of which many of you may already have seen in process. First of all, may I take this opportunity to compliment Garry Wilkinson and the ground staff on their management of the course thus far; the course is in great condition, especially the greens, which are the best they’ve been in years. Assisted by good quality investment in new equipment, we have had great feedback with regards to the course’s continual improvement. However, we have planned further developments to increase the course’s appeal, both as a 9-hole course and practice facility.
Through feedback from golf students, there has been a growing demand for improved short game facilities (pitching area & larger, more sustainable short game area); information which we decided to act upon and have been discussing over the last few months. However, the decision for this to go ahead has only been very recent, which is why we have not been able to clarify exactly what was happening until we had concrete funding and plans in place. I have had some reports of discomfort from members, due to a perceived lack of communication accompanied by fear that we may only become an 8-hole golf course. First of all, we strongly believe in the importance of communication, a key factor which has greatly improved over the last few months and will continue to flourish. Furthermore, the golf course WILL be a 9-hole course and WILL be properly measured, as it is now, to thrive as we have done for the past 10 years.
What is happening?
– The 1st hole is being changed into pitching area (100 yards & in), open to members.
– This means that the 1st hole will be the current 2nd and the tee will remain where it is.
– A footpath will be built alongside the 3G, reaching the NEW 1st tee/ bridge for complete access.
– To remain as a 9-hole golf course, the old pitching area to the left of the current 5th is currently being transformed into an approximate 130yd par 3, initially with an astroturf teeingarea (to allow time for the grass teeing area to bed-in).
– A pathway leading from the NEW 5th green through to the 6th tee will be formed (deep enough into the woods so that no ball should get through).
I solidly believe that this will be a much better hole than the first and will be a great addition to the course.
– We plan to have the NEW 5th hole ready for use BEFORE the CURRENT 1st hole is taken out of action.
– This means that the course will be re-measured and the CSS re-assessed by Lancashire CG – resulting in the requirement for new scorecards.
– Finally the drainage for the short game facilities will be improved, and spoil from work done on the pitching area will be taken over to the 9th bunkers. As we plan to make this into a grass bank, to help drainage and reduce workload of such large bunkers.
We hope you see all of our plans as a multitude of steps forward in the development of the golf course and its facilities, as we value your loyalty throughout this period. Communication such as this will continue to show and we hope that you have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy your membership at Myerscough Golf Club.
